A long list of questions
There should be a FAQ about these kind of questions...(if anybody reads this, and wants to do that, contact me)
could someone explain to me what the differents between
challenges, unpacking crackmes, and crackmes are?
Regarding to our site, we offer crackme, these are little applications with a protection in them to break. Unpacking crackmes are a subset of crackmes that need to be unpacked (removal of a compression/protection shell) and in most cases patched afterwards. Challenges are just regular crackmes but we don't publish the solutions yet, because if you solve them you get a place in our hall-of-fame.
Is there any tutorial explaing what loaders and patchers are?
I have written some small coding tutorials about loader/patcher. Check them out in the Coding section. Basically a patcher changes a targets code on the harddisk. A loader first loads the target in memory and changes code in the memory on the fly. (So a loader doesn't alter the target file on the harddisk)
Is there some tut explaing what the basic idea, or better is there some paper explaing what kind of protections are cracked which way?
Thats a bit tricky, there is no 'general' way of cracking. Every target needs to be examined to know how to approach it. But while gaining practice you tend to know how to handle certain protections.
What is the difference between the difficulty level: beginner and newbie?
newbie rated tutorials generally require very little to no experience to understand them. Beginner rated tutorials require some basic knowledge, but still deal with easy targets/techniques.
Are all crackmes, tutorials and challenges from biw.rult.at here too?
Thats the idea
But there is still a lot that needs to be added. For the time being, you can just grab them from biw.rult.at. The old site isn't going down. Overtime all old tutorials will get freshed up, reviewed, and added on this site.
Are there any good books, papers, ... you would suggest to read?
As always I recommend a basic knowledge of assembly, and processor specifics. Therefor I recommend Art of Assembly ebook (AoA). The link is available in our links section.
Are there some linux tuts about cracking too?
There is one small linux crackme, one tutorial that deals with this crackme, and one linux challenge so far. More to come in the near future. _________________ Ignorance is bliss, knowledge is power
