well this is not to discourage you but the best tutorial is a tutorial by self Smile
tkae a simple newbie crackme coded in asm and rip it apart and make a tutorial yourself and you would never need a newbie tutorial again Smile

i would suggest some simple crackmes by detten or look for them in crackmes.de and ollydbg (ollydbg is a great teacher if you handle it well
there is nothing more you would ever need apart from another friend google Smile

You may also want to try arteam's website, which is located here: hxxp://cracking.accessroot.com/

There are multiple tutorials and there is a sequence of ollydbg tutorials which get progressively harder/tackle different concepts.

Good luck in your search for knowledge

Note: this too seems to be in the wrong section, seeing as how this has nothing to do with coding.

This is in my opinion a good starting point. It's a tutorial by zephyrous and covers a lot of basic stuff like what tools to use, a little asm intro, etc.

http://n2c.no-ip.org <-- it might be a bit out dated (heck, time is flying!!) but no doubt, those paradigms and ideas are still alive.

I already read Zephyrous's tut...

I have another Q, dough.....

I tried to patch an .exe file and it worked when I runed it in Ollydbg, but when I tried to do that with hexeditor, to make permanent changes, I coudn't find these places (and yes I did wach out for -40000 and that program actualy starts at 1000 ). Using HexWorkshop. Would appretiate any help.

P.S: File is : Geneforge 3.exe (a shareware game)

those are Relative Virtual Address or Virtual Address (depends if you count the image base or not - the 00400000h), you need the File Offset.

Use some PE editor, most of them have RVA2FO or something similar...

(LordPE has that)

okie here is a idea so you said u found where to patch in olly...well here is how i would do it from now...run the exe in w32dasm go to the adress you found in olly with Goto Code location...then open the exe in hiew and look in the w32dasm status bar in the @Offset place and enter the value without the h in the end in hiew and you should get to that adress in olly then edit it and voila Very Happy

I think that is the most complicated and longest way to do that RVA2FO procedure I've ever heard.

Of course it works, try using LordPE or something for the RVA2FO, maybe even learn how to calc it yourself Wink

Believe you me, it will only make your life easier Razz
